On Monday evening, Arizona Glass Alliance will proudly host a presentation by the internationally very well known glass artist, sculptor and painter Therman Statom. Therman is a very noted and recognized pioneer of the studio glass movement, particularly for this life size glass ladders, constructed box-like paintings and small scale houses. The surface of Therman’s sculpures become the canvas for paintings and collages, using spontaneous vibrant colors and line, with references to Abstract Expressionism, while simultaneously incorporating blown glass objects.
Therman’s work has received critical recognition around the world and you’ll find it in museums such as the Detroit Institute of Art, the High Museum of Atlanta, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Renwick Museum of the Smithsonian, as well as dozens of private collections across the country.
In addition to his personal size work Therman has created many instantly recognizable installations in such diverse venues as the Skirball Cultural Center of Los Angeles, the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas, the Washington, DC convention center, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Corning Museum of Art, the Los Angeles Central Public Library and right here in the Scottsdale Center for Arts. Besides his work as a practicing artist, Therman also devotes a substantial amount of his time to arts based programes in educational and social services. Many of his projects often involving young people, in direct, hands-on learning and experiences.
