On Monday evening, December 14, Arizona Glass Alliance, in cooperation with the Pittsburgh Glass Center, will proudly host a virtual presentation by the very well known ceramic and mixed media artist and educator Sharif Bey. Sharif’s work, which often combines other materials, sometimes including glass, ranges from functional vessels to large scale sculptures, and is influenced by ritual and identity as well as function. Bey’s creations have received widespread international exhibition and recognition, including the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Award in 2018, and he has been invited to lecture at schools such as Harvard, Penn State and Ohio Wesleyan.
You will find examples of Sharif’s work in such well known museums as the Carnegie and the Renwick. In 2010 the United States “Art in the Embassies” program commissioned Bey to create one of his large scale “conceptual bead” installations for the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, and another in 2018 for the new U.S. embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia.
In addition to his work as an independent artist and professor of art at Syracuse University, Bey continues to conduct workshops in the visual arts for both children and adults throughout the U.S. and abroad. An image of one of Sharif’s large scale bead installations is shown below, and to learn more about him and see images of more of his work take a look at his website, www.sharifbeyceramics.com.
