On Monday evening, Arizona Glass Alliance in partnership with Warren Norgaard’s Milkweed Studio, will host a presentation by the very interesting glass and mixed media artist Sayaka Suzuki. Sayaka creates a wide variety of work, including cast glass pieces using the pate de verre (paste of glass) technique, as well as installations using a variety of other materials. Originally from Japan and now living with her American husband outside Richmond, Virginia, Sayaka’s work has been exhibited in galleries across the country, including right here as part of the 2008 annual craft exhibition at the Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, as well as such diverse places as Portugal, Korea, Italy, Japan and China.

Sayaka says this about her work: “I investigate my identity as Japanese-born married into an American family through the language of adaption. My perspectives fluctuate somewhere in between the traditions of the island country and the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia that my new family calls home. There is excitement, uncertainty and desire to meld the heritages together in a new lexicon, like a soliloquy weaving in and out of cultures, molding a new interpretation of what it means to adopt a new country and new ideologies.”

An image of one of Sayaka’s creations is shown below and to see more of her work, including her very interesting installations, please take a look at her website, sayaka-suzuki.com.
