Desert Impressions Presentation: Paul Anders-Stout

Wednesday, January 12, 2022 7:00 PM Zoom Presentation

On Wednesday evening at 7 PM Arizona Glass Alliance will proudly present a “triple header” event when we will host Lynn Davis, the Director of the Sonoran Glass School, Paul Anders-Stout, who is the Director of the school’s hot shop, and Alison Harvey, the new owner of Philabaum Gallery in Tucson.

The Sonoran Glass School (www.sonoranglass.com) was founded in 2001 by Tom Philabaum and Dave Klein, who transformed a dilapidated tire station in Tucson’s historic Barrio Santa Rosa into one of the premier full service, nonprofit glass arts educational facilities in the Southwest. The school promotes creation and appreciation of art made from glass through educational courses, one-on-one experiences, visiting artists seminars and community events. Among its many programs the school supports a Youth Education Program which serves school age children, many of whom are disadvantaged, from across Tucson. Arizona Glass Alliance has supported the school with grants for several years and Lynn will tell us some of the ways the school is using our funding as well as plans for the future.

Paul Anders-Stout, Director of Shops, also works as a practicing studio artist, creating beautiful glass sculptures that are blown, sand cast or fused. Paul says this about working in glass: “I am inspired by the desert, by its heat, its smells, its rhythms. I am inspired by the process of creating glass art itself, the challenge of craftsmanship and the stimulation of ideas. The study of glass is a deep rabbit hole, it has been twenty years and I’m still falling.” An image of several of Paul’s pieces is shown below and for more images take a look at his website www.stoutglass.com.

Philabaum Gallery (www.philabaumglass.com), originally founded and run by Tom Philabaum and his wife Dabney, is now owned by Alison Harvey and her husband Dylan. Alison previously worked for the Philabaums as manager of the gallery for ten years. Under Alison’s leadership the gallery has added several new, exciting artists and continues to play a prominent role in the Tucson art scene. Alison will give us a short overview of what’s going on in the gallery these days.
