On Monday evening, January 13, Arizona Glass Alliance will very proudly host a presentation by the world famous sculptor in glass, Daniel Clayman. Dan, who hails from Lynn, Massachusetts, brings an interesting early background to his career, having worked in the professional theater, dance and opera world before receiving his BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. Since then Dan has become one of the leading sculptors in glass in the world, and his iconic, often abstract creations and forms are instantly recognizable by knowledgeable collectors as a “Clayman”. Dan’s work ranges from smaller, home sized pieces to massive installations, such as his 2017 installation at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. Dan’s work emphasizes shape, color and light, and in Dan’s words each piece is a “manifestation of a moment of thought”, and his work often stretches the boundaries of what’s possible to create in glass.
Dan’s work is in the collections of literally dozens of museums, including the Corning, Cleveland, De Young in San Francisco, the High Museum in Atlanta, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the San Francisco Museum of Fine Art and the Renwick. Dan’s work has been featured in solo shows in leading galleries and museums around the country, including the Museum of Glass in Tacoma (2008) and the Mint Museum in Charlotte (2007).
On a personal level, you’ll find Dan to be as interesting as his work, with great technical knowledge and a lively sense of humor
An image of one of Dan’s current pieces, “Lumen” (which Dan will be bringing with him), is shown below, and to learn more about Dan and his work please visit his website, www.danielclayman.com.
