On Monday afternoon, April 5, Arizona Glass Alliance will proudly host a presentation by the very distinguished glass artist and educator Brent Kee Young. From 1973 through 2014 Brent was head of the glass department at the prestigious Cleveland Institute of Art, an undergraduate college of art and design. A number of today’s leading glass artist received their art/glass education with Brent and CIA. Equally importantly, Brent has long been internationally recognized for his iconic glass work including his latest explorations the Matrix Series. The series are flame constructed sculptures, which are complex and large scale, yet delicate and beautifully interesting. Brent’s work has been collected and exhibited by major galleries such as Habatat, important private collections and museums such as the Renwick (Smithsonian Museum of American Art), Corning Museum of Glass and the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburg and the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, to name a few. Brent will be joining us from his home base in Cleveland by Zoom.

Brent continues to create wonderfully constructed sculptures. An example entitled “Learn One Thing Well” is shown below. As Brent describes this piece and his work “An anvil speaks to the history of object making, especially by hand, as well as the physics of the materials chosen. There is irony in representing this massive object in such a delicate way of construction, one as ephemeral as tumbleweed. This explains something about myself, what interests me, and hopefully engages the viewer on a different level. All of the sculptures are what I would consider in the realm of defining form with line and light, something that glass does so well. However complex the structures, what is seen by the eye are a matrix of glints of short lines, segments of light which define each form and speak to each idea.” To learn more about Brent and see images of more of his work take a look at his website, www.brentkeeyoung.com.
