On Sunday evening, April 10, Arizona Glass Alliance will host a presentation by Aaron Kirchhoff, who currently serves on the faculty at North Dakota State University where he teaches sculpture. Prior to his appointment at North Dakota State, Aaron worked as the Scientific Glass Specialist and Optical Glass Technician at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Washington, DC, and also at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. As you may be aware, scientific glass working is one of the long established arms of glass activity, and has resulted in the creation of many beautiful objects, such as the famous Blaschka botanicals at Harvard University which were done over a century ago, in addition to utilitarian pieces.

Aaron’s work has been recognized by the New Glass Review as well as Fusion, Journal of the American Scientific Glassblower’s Society. You can see the influences of Aaron’s scientific bent in his current work, such as the piece shown below, which is entitled “Uncommon Ovoid Abnormality of the European Nightjar” and is created from soda-lime glass, lead glass and vitreous enamel.

This presentation will be held in conjunction with our “end of season” celebration on April 10 at Ancala Country Club, which is located at 11700 E. Via Linda in Scottsdale, at the corner of Via Linda and 118th Street.
